The half-naked body of a four-year-old girl was found hanging from a tree in a township east of Johannesburg on Monday, in the latest case of macabre violence against children in South Africa, police said.

Police spokesman Lungelo Dlamini said the body was discovered by a passer-by in an open field. It had no wounds.

"We are investigating a case of murder and also conducting tests to establish if the child was raped," said Dlamini.

In another case, the body of a five-year-old girl, who had been missing since Saturday, was found under a rubbish heap in a township north of the city.

Police suspect that she was suffocated.

No arrests have been made.

South Africa has one of the highest murder rates outside war zones.

Around 16,000 people are killed annually, according to the latest official statistics available.
