Veteran British journalist and commentator Anthony Howard, one of the country's most respected political pundits, has died at the age of 76 after a short illness, his family said.

In a career spanning more than four decades he worked at many major British newspapers, serving as deputy editor for the Observer weekly and obituaries editor of The Times, as well as writing for the Guardian and Sunday Times.

He was also editor of the leftwing current affairs magazine New Statesman for several years in the 1970s.

But in recent years he was best known as a political commentator on television, and his on-screen thoughts were still in much demand during this year's general election campaign.

Prime Minister David Cameron led tributes to Howard, saying his death had robbed the country of "one of its best informed and talented commentators."

He died at hospital in London on Sunday.
