Two British freelance journalists were to be thrown out of Yemen Monday after reporting from the strife-torn Middle Eastern country despite having entered on student visas, British officials said.

"The British embassy (in Sanaa) can confirm that two British nationals will be deported from Yemen this evening," a Foreign Office spokeswoman told AFP.

"The British embassy has offered consular assistance on this matter."

A government source added that Yemeni officials had informed their British counterparts that the pair entered on student visas but had been doing a lot of work as freelance journalists.

No further details of their identities were given.

Yemen has been rocked by weeks of protests, with demonstrators demanding the resignation of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, in power for 32 years, amid a wave of unrest spreading across the Arab world.

Some 40 people have been killed in political violence since unrest erupted in the deeply tribal country at the end of January.
