The Pacific island nation of Tonga deployed a second contingent of soldiers to Afghanistan on Wednesday as part of a two year commitment, officials said.

Army captain Toni Fonokalafi said the 55 soldiers would undergo six-weeks training in England before being stationed in the southern Afghan province of Helmand for six months where they would replace the first Tongan contingent.

Tonga will send two more contingents to Afghanistan over the next 12 months.
