Spain urges Iran to probe British embassy attack

Spain on Thursday urged Iran to investigate the attack on the British embassy by protesters this week and demanded that Tehran compensate London for the damage done to the building.

The Spanish foreign ministry summoned Iran's ambassador to Spain, Morteza Saffari Natanzi, to make the demand and express its "most emphatic condemnation" of the embassy attack, the ministry said in a statement.

"The Spanish government asked the Iranian ambassador for an investigation to clear up the behaviour of security forces during the assault and the statements made by top officials, politicians and Iranian institutions," it said.

"The Spanish government demanded compensation for British authorities for the damage caused and that measures be taken against those responsible for this serious incident."

The Spanish foreign ministry also warned the Iranian ambassador that the attack against the British embassy could affect relations between the European Union and Iran.

France, Germany and the Netherlands have already recalled their ambassadors from Iran after the British embassy in Tehran was stormed on Tuesday.

Italy also summoned the charge d'affaires at the Iranian embassy in Rome.
