Britain's energy regulator said on Wednesday that it had fined British Gas £2.5 million for failing to properly deal with customer complaints.

Ofgem fined British Gas, a unit of energy giant Centrica, the equivalent of 2.8 million euros or $4.1 million after it "breached regulations setting standards for the way energy companies handle customer complaints."

"The fine is a warning from Ofgem that all energy companies must take complaint handling seriously and treat their customers fairly," the watchdog added in a statement.

A spokesman for British Gas, which provides energy to millions of homes and businesses, said: "Specifically for our micro-business customers, we acknowledge our service fell short of what they should expect from British Gas, for which we apologise."
