Prince Harry heads home after US training, partying

Britain's Prince Harry has flown home after a nearly two month military training mission in California, which also saw the fun-loving royal let his hair down in San Diego and Las Vegas.

The 27-year-old returned to Britain on Sunday from the Naval Air Facility in El Centro in southern California, where he arrived in early October to learn to fly Apache helicopter gunships in terrain similar to Afghanistan.

"He completed his training and he was sent back to the UK yesterday," a base spokesman told AFP, declining to give further details but adding that Britain's defense ministry would release a statement.

Harry, the third in line to the throne, returns to Britain a fully fledged Apache pilot, but British officials have declined to speculate on whether he might be allowed to return to Afghanistan.

The prince -- or Captain Wales in his military role -- has made it clear he is determined to serve again in Afghanistan, where his deployment as a soldier in 2007-2008 had to be hastily cut short after a media blackout was breached.

Harry wasted no time getting into the spirit of things on the first weekend of his stay in California.

Within hours of his arrival he was spotted in a pub and watching rugby in a downtown hotel in San Diego, about two hours away from the base in El Centro where he was stationed.

He also spent a long weekend in Las Vegas earlier this month, arriving on a rented Harley Davidson and spending three nights partying, including with a mystery blonde woman, according to local reports.
