The prosecutor in charge of the rape case against Julian Assange said on Tuesday she had no intention of extraditing the WikiLeaks boss to the United States if he is brought to Sweden to face justice.

"I did not execute a European arrest warrant against him for him to be extradited to the United States," Marianne Ny told Swedish reporters in the southern city of Gothenburg, according to the TT news agency.

"The investigation has nothing to do with WikiLeaks. This concerns him (Assange) personally," the prosecutor was also quoted as saying by the website of the Aftonbladet daily.

Ny was speaking shortly after Assange appeared in a London court where he was remanded in custody following his decision to surrender to police.

Swedish prosecutors had filed an international arrest warrant against Assange who is also accused of sexual molestation. The 39-year-old Australian has made clear that he will fight extradition to Sweden.

US Attorney General Eric Holder has said that the background to the mass release of US cables by Assange's whistleblowing website is the subject of a criminal investigation although there has been no formal extradition request.
