New English-language paper hits French newsstands

A new English-language newspaper aimed at the hordes of anglophone expatriots and visitors in France has hit the newsstands, claiming to be the first such journal 100 percent "made in France."

Based in Castillones, in a southwestern region where hundreds of thousands of British, American and other English-speaking expats have homes, "The French Week" offers 16 pages of French news seen from the viewpoint of an English-language speaker.

The paper joins a handful of other regional English-language publications in France but claims to be the first to be fully and independently produced there

It is a successor to the monthly "French News" which folded during the recent recession after publishing for 21 years in the same region.

"We explain to the anglophone in France what is going on around them and we add analysis and comment but also more fun things about culture, sport, leisure and gardening," its British editor-in-chief Miranda Neame told AFP.

Its first issue this week had a cover story on the financial scandals that hit France's Labour Minister Woerth in recent weeks, plus an interview with a well-known left-wing farmer-turned-activist, Jose Bove.

"It's the first weekly paper that is 100 percent French," said the newspaper's spokesman Adam Brown, another Briton, explaining that the newspaper pays French taxes and is printed in the nearby southwestern town of Agen.

"Subscriptions are coming in nice and fast," he added.

It has 76,000 euros (about 100,000 dollars) of funding from its four full-time journalists and five other investors.

Of the first run of 40,000 copies distributed on July 30, up to 12,000 were sold, the newspaper said this week.
