Heavy fines for five companies in British oil depot fire

Five companies responsible for a huge explosion at an oil depot in Britain in 2005 were ordered to pay fines and costs totalling more than nine million pounds (13.8 million dollars, 10.6 million euros), a court ruled on Friday.

French oil giant Total received the stiffest penalty for the incident at Buncefield oil depot north of London, being ordered to pay a fine of 3.6 million pounds plus costs of 2.6 million pounds.
