Case dropped against British nurse over saline bags

British prosecutors said Friday they had dropped the case against a nurse at a hospital where police believe saline solution was contaminated with insulin.

Rebecca Leighton, 27, was arrested at her home on July 20 over a string of suspicious deaths at a hospital in Stockport, near Manchester in northwest England.

She is in custody and faced trial in February on charges relating to alleged tampering with saline bags and other medical products.

But the Crown Prosecution Service said it was "no longer appropriate" to continue the case against Leighton.

The chief crown prosecutor for northwest England, Nazir Afzal, said: "The inquiries, which are still ongoing, have not so far provided us with a stronger case which would meet the test that there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction. This is the test all cases must meet for a prosecution to go ahead."

Police have revealed they are investigating seven deaths among 40 cases of contamination.
