A British warship docked Tuesday in the oil-rich emirate of Abu Dhabi to take part in exercises with the Emirati navy, the British embassy said.

"The 18,500 tonne amphibious assault ship Albion is leading the Royal Navy's Response Force Task Group (RFTG), a maritime quick reaction force consisting of ships, helicopters and Royal Marines," the embassy said in a statement.

Since leaving Britain in early April, the RFTG has supported NATO-led operations in Libya, the group said in a statement.

"Two ships from the Task Group, the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean and the destroyer HMS Liverpool, will remain in the Mediterranean in support of ongoing NATO operations," said Captain James Morley, commanding officer of HMS Albion.

NATO-led forces have been carrying out air strikes against the regime of Libyan leader Moamer Kadhafi since late March, under a UN mandate to protect civilians from a deadly crackdown on pro-reform protests.
