Acclaimed British author Beryl Bainbridge, known for her portraits of working class life, has died aged 75, her literary agent and hospital officials said Friday.

Bainbridge's books include "An Awfully Big Adventure" and "The Birthday Boys". She was nominated for leading literary award the Booker Przie for a record five times but failed to win.

"It all happened suddenly," Ed Wilson of her literary agency Johnson and Alcock told the Guardian newspaper.

"She went in for a check-up because her chest was feeling tight, and she never came out. None of us knew how serious it was."

A London hospital which had been treating her confirmed her death.

Bainbridge, who had cancer, was also noted for her eccentric personal style. One interviewer claimed she was obsessed with teeth and kept a stuffed water buffalo in the hall of her London home.
