Britain suspends unaccompanied air cargo from Somalia

Britain has suspended all unaccompanied air cargo from Somalia in the wake of a foiled Al-Qaeda bomb plot against US-bound flights, interior minister Theresa May said Monday.

She said the move was due to possible contact between Al-Qaeda militants based in Yemen, who are accused of being behind the plot, and "terrorist" groups based in Somalia.

Britain banned all freight from Yemen from coming into the country, including in transit, shortly after the discovery of one of the bombs at a British airport on Friday. Another package was found in Dubai.

"From midnight tonight we will extend the suspension of unaccompanied air freight to this country not just from Yemen but also Somalia," May, the Home Secretary, told parliament.
