The London Hilton on Park Lane, one of the British capital's top hotels, was evacuated Friday after a fire broke out in the kitchens.

Around 1,500 people had to leave the 28-storey hotel overlooking Hyde Park following the blaze.

Clouds of smoke emanating from the bottom of the hotel were visible across the London skyline. The smoke then appeared to be under control but broke out again.

London Fire Brigade said it was called shortly before 7:00pm (1800 GMT) to reports of smoke in a second floor kitchen vent and in the basement, and sent four fire engines.

Police said nobody had been injured.
