Police in Northern Ireland said Sunday they had charged a man with a series of terrorism-related offences after seizing a number of guns.

"The charges follow a significant fire-arms find ... linked to current dissident republican activity," said a spokeswoman for the Police Service of Northern Ireland.

The 54-year-old man was arrested Friday in Newry, close to the border with the Republic of Ireland. He is due to appear in a Newry court on Monday.

He faced a series of charges, including "possession of articles likely to be of use to terrorists, preparation of terrorist acts (and) possession of firearms with intent to endanger life".

The arrest and charges come as British security services last week raised the threat level from Northern Ireland-related "terrorism".
