British retail sales fall in August: data

Retail sales in Britain fell by 0.5 percent in August compared with a month earlier, official data showed on Thursday, disappointing experts who had been expecting a rise.

They climbed 0.4 percent in August compared with 12 months earlier, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said in a statement.

Market expectations had been for a monthly gain of 0.3 percent and a year-on-year increase of 0.2 percent, according to a survey by Dow Jones Newswires.
