A British court on Thursday granted bail to Rwandan intelligence chief Karenzi Karake, who was arrested last week at London Heathrow Airport on a Spanish-issued arrest warrant.

"I am prepared to grant you conditional bail," the judge said, setting the bail amount at £1.0 million (1.4 million euros, $1.6 million) and ordering Karake to report to the police daily.

After the hearing, Rwanda's High Commissioner to Britain, Williams Nkurunziza, told AFP: "I'm very happy but I would have been happier if he would have been allowed to return. This is the best it gets with this legal system."

Karake will live either at the high commissioner's family home or in a house rented by the Rwandan embassy, although the precise location was not specified publicly during the hearing.
