British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Monday he was "deeply saddened" by news of a plane crash in northwestern Iran, which killed 77 people.

"I was deeply saddened to hear of the crash of an Iran Air plane near Orumiyeh on 9 January, resulting in the loss of many lives," Hague said in a statement.

"I would like to offer my sympathy to those who lost family members in the crash, and wish all those injured a swift and complete recovery."

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has ordered an investigation into the crash Sunday of the Boeing 727, which was operated by state-run Iran Air, state media said.
