Anglican bishops to defect to Rome: report

A group of traditionalist Church of England bishops from Britain have met Vatican officials to tell them they are ready to defect to Rome, the Sunday Telegraph reported.

The Bishop of Fulham John Broadhurst, the Bishop of Richborough Keith Newton and the Bishop of Ebbsfleet Andrew Burnham met advisors of Pope Benedict XVI last week, the paper said, without quoting sources.

An Anglican spokesman did not want to comment on the report when contacted by AFP.

Last year, the pope announced measures which made it easier for Anglicans disgruntled over issues like the ordination of women to convert to Catholicism.

The pope is due to visit Britain from September 16-19.
