Russia's federal anti-narcotics agency has arrested 93 members of a drugs cartel operating in the country's south, the head of the agency said Wednesday.

The agency raided the cartel earlier this month in the southern region of Bashkortostan, its chief Viktor Ivanov said at a news conference, quoted by the RIA Novosti news agency.

"All together, 200 active members were drawn into the network. Their earnings from drug dealing were up to $1.5 million per month," Ivanov said, quoted by the agency.

"We confiscated a large amount of drugs, arrested 93 people involved in drug trafficking," Ivanov said. "We uncovered their communications, their supply routes, the whole network."

The cartel laundered its ill-gotten gains by investing in a football club and a car repair business and members referred to the leader as the "general director," Ivanov said.

He called the operation on January 3 the federal agency's greatest success since it was founded in 2004, RIA Novosti reported.
