Poland hopes Medvedev visit will improve ties

Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski expressed hope Wednesday that his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev's visit next month would improve historically tense ties between Warsaw and its Soviet-era master.

"We hope President Dmitry Medvedev's visit (on December 6) will be not only a simple turning-point (in bilateral relations) but the first step in the right direction," the Polish PAP news agency quoted Komorowski as saying.

The Polish leader made the statement after a meeting of Poland's national security council focused on relations with Russia ahead of the Medvedev visit.

Former heads of state, including Poland's last communist leader General Wojciech Jaruzelski and Solidarity legend Lech Walesa, Poland's first democratically elected president after the 1989 collapse of communism, took part in the meeting.

Poland's foreign minister Radoslaw Sikorski recently indicated Warsaw and Moscow would conclude a series of agreements during Medvedev's visit to Poland. bo-mas/ga
