Russian security forces on Saturday killed four militants in the volatile North Caucasus, where the body of a contract soldier with knife wounds to the groin was also found, officials said.

In Dagestan, two policemen on Saturday received light injuries during a fight with a group of militants, two of whom were killed, a spokesman for the regional police told AFP.

In Ingushetia, two young armed men were killed on Saturday as members of the FSB security service tried to stop their car.

The two men in the car began shooting and "were killed by return fire," said a regional security official, speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity.

The two men turned out to be brothers, whose third brother was killed last year, the official said.

In Chechnya, the body of a contract soldier with knife wounds to his groin was found Friday on the bank of the Argun river, an officer on duty at the regional branch of the Investigative Committee of the Prosecutor General's Office told AFP.

In the North Caucasus regions of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia attacks on officials have become a regular occurrence amid signs that the unrest is spreading to the regions that had previously seen fewer signs of violence.

In Kabardino-Balkaria, which is famed for its ski resorts and is located nearby, an unidentified assailant fired multiple shots at the car of a policeman in the town of Nalchik on Friday night, the Moscow-based investigators said in a statement.

The policeman received wounds to his arm and chest as a result of the attack while the assailant fled the scene, the statement said.
