Ukrainian and Russian representatives as well as European mediators and pro-Moscow separatists went into talks in Minsk on Tuesday ahead of a crunch peace summit set for Wednesday.

Former Ukrainian president Leonid Kuchma, Russian ambassador to Kiev Mikhail Zurabov, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe envoy Heidi Tagliavini as well as rebels Denis Pushilin and Vladislav Deinego met at an official residence in the Belarussian capital, an AFP correspondent said.

The talks are aimed at thrashing out the details of a peace plan ahead of four-way summit on Wednesday involving Russian, Ukrainian, French and German leaders.

The summit is aimed at ending the 10-month Ukrainian conflict in which at least 5,300 people have been killed.
