The UN Security Council will hold an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the escalation of fighting in Ukraine that is threatening a four-month European-brokered truce.

The meeting was requested by Lithuania after Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said that more than 9,000 Russian troops had poured into east Ukraine.

The upsurge in fighting near the rebel stronghold of Donetsk has left 26 dead and is one of the worst outbreaks of violence since the truce was agreed in February.

The meeting is scheduled for 1330 GMT, a Lithuanian diplomat said.
