Russia on Friday reacted guardedly to the departure of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, with the only reaction comments by the foreign minister that made no mention of his dramatic resignation.

Russian state news agency ITAR-TASS published comments by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that expressed hope for stability in Eygpt but it was not clear if they were made before or after the resignation.

Two hours after the resignation was first announced, no further reaction was available.

"We hope that the latest events will help the restoration of stability and ensuring the normal functioning of all the structures of the authorities," Lavrov was quoted as saying.

Lavrov expressed hope that "not only the structures of the current government but also opposition forces will show readiness to stabilise the situation."

Lavrov said that the "latest news" was the result of "the process which was being carried out between the country's main political forces."

He made no further comment and neither the foreign ministry or ITAR-TASS could give additional details on the context of the comments when contacted by AFP.
