Syria's army Wednesday cut the last supply route linking rebel forces in the city of Aleppo to the Turkish border, adding to a list of advances in the past four months.

It is the latest conquest of rebel-held territory in the north, northwest and south by the army of the war-stricken country since Russian air strikes began on September 30, 2015:

A timeline:

- 2015 -

September 30: Russia launches air strikes in Syria, saying its intervention is against "terrorist groups", including the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group. Rebels and their foreign backers say it is targeting moderate regime opponents in a bid to bolster President Bashar al-Assad.

November 10: Syrian regime troops celebrate their first significant victory against the IS, breaking a more than two-year-long siege by the group at the major Kweyris military air base in Aleppo province of northern Syria.

November 12: The army, backed by allied forces and Russian raids, seizes the rebel town of Al-Hader, a former opposition bastion near the Aleppo-Damascus highway. Lebanon's Hezbollah fighters as well as Iranian forces also take part in the operation.

December 25: The leadership of Saudi-backed Jaish al-Islam (Army of Islam) movement, the predominant opposition faction in the Eastern Ghouta rebel bastion east of Damascus, is decimated in an air strike claimed by the regime, which kills its commander Zahran Alloush.

- 2016 -

January 12: The army and allied forces take full control of the strategic town of Salma, in the northwestern province of Latakia on the Mediterranean. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Russia carried out more than 120 air strikes over 48 hours in support of the offensive.

January 14: Regime forces edge closer to an IS group bastion in Aleppo province, capturing the town of Aarran from the IS, with the backing of intense Russian air strikes.

January 24: Loyalist forces overrun Rabia, the last major rebel-held town in Latakia province.

January 25: The army captures the strategic southern rebel town of Sheikh Miskeen, close to the Jordanian border, with the help of Hezbollah, Iranian officers and Russian air strikes.

January 26: Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov says the air strikes in support of pro-Assad forces have helped turn the tide in Syria.

February 3: Syrian troops backed by Russian warplanes cut the last supply route linking rebels in Aleppo city to the Turkish border, in a major blow to the opposition.
