US concerned about local Russian law on gays

The United States said Thursday it is concerned by local legislation in Russia that would curb freedoms for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people.

Lawmakers in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on Wednesday adopted a bill sponsored by the ruling United Russia party that would impose fines for any “public action” promoting homosexuality.

“We are concerned by proposed local legislation in Russia that would severely restrict freedoms of expression and assembly for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals, and indeed all Russians,” the State Department said when asked to comment on the legislation.

“We have called on Russian officials to safeguard these freedoms, and to foster an environment which promotes respect for the rights of all citizens,” the State Department said in a statement.

“We have also consulted with our EU (European Union) partners on this issue. They share our concerns and are also engaging Russian officials on this,” it said.

“The United States places great importance on combating discrimination against the LGBT community and all minority groups,” it added.
