Slain guerrilla son of Caucasus police chief: report

A suspected guerrilla killed in Russia’s volatile Dagestan region Saturday in a clash with security forces was the son of a local crime police chief, the ITAR-TASS news agency reported.

A police source told ITAR-TASS that the man killed when security troops stormed his apartment in the town of Derbent, was Arsen Akhmedov, son of the town’s crime police chief Abdulbas Akhmedov.

The source added that “he left the family home in June and never returned, so he was considered lost.”

Russian authorities and rights groups voiced concern over frequent disappearances of young men in the conflict-torn North Caucasus, where many are likely to join guerrilla groups.

Russia has in recent years been fighting an increasingly deadly Islamist-fuelled insurgency in the North Caucasus regions of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia which has claimed scores of lives annually.
