Eight killed in Dagestan car bomb: official

Eight people including a policeman were killed on Wednesday in a car bomb attack outside a village in Russia’s strife-torn Northern Caucasus region of Dagestan, officials said.

An 11-year-old girl was among the victims of the explosion near Khadzhalmakhi.

Police had been called out to examine the suspect parked car. The device went off as officers were carring out the inspection, killing one and injuring six others.

Among the others killed were the occupants of a passing car, media reported police as saying.

Dagestan has recently seen an upsurge in the unrest which has torn the Caspian Sea region over the years, with officials blaming Islamist insurgents seeking to oust the pro-Kremlin authorities.
