Vilamoura warns public about water use

inframouraPromoting sustainable use of water is the main objective of the new plan that has been spawned by the municipal company Inframoura.

Inframoura’s water campaign encompasses several awareness-raising actions and aims to involve Vilamoura residents and visitors in improving their knowledge of good water use habits, to raise awareness of water scarcity and overuse of plastics, and to promote sustainable solutions that can be adopted in everyday life.

This campaign began in the first week of July with a survey on social networks, with the purpose of assessing tap water consumption in Vilamoura.

The second action took place on August 13th, and consisted of inviting residents and tourists to take part in a blind tasting test of tap water from Vilamoura and bottled water in order to gauge whether people had a noticeable preference.

From the data collected, it was found that 47% of participants preferred tap water and 53% preferred to drink the bottled water.

In addition, the survey on tap water consumption further deepened this issue to understand what the motivations that lead the population not to consume tap water are. 43% didn’t drink tap water simply out of habit, 38% do not like the taste and 19% have doubts about the quality of the water in regards to being potable or not.

The campaign began with the need to gather more information on the perspectives of the population about this wide-ranging theme in the water sector, ranging from its efficient use to the consumption of tap water.

“Having a detailed knowledge of the behaviour of the population and subsequently objectively directing Inframoura’s communication plan was paramount in the realization and approval of this plan,” says Inframoura.

The municipal company is “implementing integrated demand management and water conservation strategies so that customers adopt sustainable behaviours, as well as developing water loss monitoring and control methodologies that enable improved efficiency, in terms of being operational, financially-sound and environmentally-friendly.”
