Bombeiros candidate arrested on suspicion of setting up 11 forest fires in São Brás de Alportel

The Polícia Judiciária have detained an individual on suspicion of intentionally causing 11 forest fires around São Brás de Alportel, Faro.

The arrest occurred due to strong evidence that, between March and September of this year, the man had “set off 11 forest fires, by direct ignition, in wooded areas. They did not reach greater proportions due to the rapid intervention of firefighters through air and ground”, revealed the PJ in a press release.

The suspect, who applied to his local Bombeiros division to work as a volunteer firefighter, after failing and retaking his access exams, “was seen on social networks completely in uniform with the firefighter’s garb, brandishing that quality.”

The arrest took place in the context of an investigation conducted by the Public Prosecutor of the DIAP in Faro. The 23-year-old detainee, a cook and native of Faro, with no previous criminal record, will be present for judicial interrogation for officials to deliberate on appropriate enforcement measures.
