A Libyan government official flew to Malta on Wednesday for talks with Maltese Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi, before flying on to Portugal, the Maltese government said in a statement.
Mohammed Taher Siyala visited “the Maltese prime minister to explain the Libyan government’s position on the recent events,” the government said.
“The prime minister reiterated the Maltese government’s position… and insisted that all violence has to stop immediately,” it added.
Portuguese Foreign Minister Luis Amado was to meet the Libyan envoy in Lisbon later Wednesday, his ministry said, on the eve of key EU talks on Libya in Brussels.
Amado on Thursday will be attending a gathering of the European Union’s 27 foreign ministers that was hastily called ahead of a crisis summit on Libya taking placed in Brussels on Friday.
An EU source said the bloc had received no request to date for talks with an envoy from Kadhafi.
