French tourist dies in Madeira fall

An 81-year-old French tourist died Saturday after falling into a ravine on the Portuguese island of Madeira, emergency service officials said.

“The tourist was walking with a group and when he stopped to take a photo and it seems he slipped and fell” around 100 metres (330 feet), Portugal’s Lusa news agency quoted fire service officials as saying.

Madeira, Portugal’s “Pearl of the Atlantic”, lying around 500 kilometres (325 miles) off the Moroccan coast, is a major tourist draw owing to its volcanic landscape and temperate climate.
