Dutchman found dead in New Zealand

21 November 2005

AMSTERDAM — Rescue workers discovered the bodies of millionaire Michael Erceg and Dutch beer executive Guus Klatte (38) on Saturday in the wreckage of a helicopter in New Zealand.

The two men probably died instantly when Erceg’s helicopter crashed in dense bush near Raglan on 4 November, the National Rescue Coordination Centre in New Zealand said.

The men were travelling from Auckland to Queenstown when the helicopter disappeared from radar 30 minutes into the flight.

The official search for the helicopter was abandoned more than a week ago, but a private search led by the families continued. The helicopter was found in bush on a farm south of Raglan on Saturday night. The crash site is not far from Mount Karioi.

Erceg, 50, was the founder of Independent Liquor and New Zealand’s ninth richest man. Klatte, who lived in the Netherlands, was an export manager for Dutch beer company Grolsch. He was on a business trip to New Zealand.

Grolsch expressed sadness on Saturday at the confirmation Erceg and Klatte are dead.
