Dutch tourists in Kenya repatriated

7 January 2008

AMSTERDAM – Some 200 Dutch tourists were repatriated to the Netherlands from Kenya on Friday night, travel agency TUI in the Netherlands said.

Dutch tourists who booked with other agencies were also welcome to join the special charter flight booked for the repatriation, TUI said.

On Wednesday, the umbrella organisation of Dutch travel agencies, Calamiteitenfonds, defined Kenya as a country on high security alert.

Violence has continued to rock Kenya after President Mwai Kibaki was returned to power in contested elections that have inflamed ethnic tensions.

On 31 December the Dutch Foreign Ministry issued a travel warning for Kenya, advising all Dutch nationals to avoid the country unless absolutely necessary.

Several hundred Dutch tourists have since returned home on flights by Air France-KLM and Kenya Airways.
