11 January 2005

AMSTERDAM — A Dutch national was killed and about 33 others injured when a bus carrying Muslim pilgrims to Mecca crashed some 90km from the Saudi city of Medina on Tuesday.

The bus was carrying about 40 Dutch nationals of Moroccan ancestry and was driving in a southwesterly direction from Medina to Mecca when the accident occurred. Both cities are holy Islamic sites.

One news report said the accident was caused by a burst tyre and the injured have been transported to the Koning Fahd Hospitaal in Medina, where they were visited by the provincial governor.

An Arab News report indicated that 33 people were injured in the crash, nine of whom were seriously hurt, Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad reported.
