ADO player in football fraud case

19 May 2006

AMSTERDAM — Several employees of ADO Den Haag have been questioned in relation to the alleged involvement of one player in illegal gambling on matches in the Dutch league, the club said on Friday.

“I really want to emphasise that the investigation at ADO Den Haag is not directed at the organisation but on an individual player,” ADO general director Robert Langenbach said.

The club said it will cooperate fully with the authorities. ADO is the first club to confirm one of its players has been linked to the allegations.

Media reports that justice officials are also looking at FC Utrecht and Willem II of Tilburg led to strenuous denials by those clubs.

“Willem II has not been contacted by prosecutors in relation to the investigation into alleged corruption in Dutch football, Chairman Hans Verbunt wrote on the club’s website. Verbunt promised to cooperate if asked by the authorities.

FC Utrecht posted a similar statement on its website.
