AMSTERDAM — Transport Minister Karla Peijs has decided to rescind the 80km/h speed limit zone on the A12 from The Hague because it has worsened the traffic jam problem.
Motorists coming from The Hague will be able to drive again at speeds of up to 100 km/h on the highway by mid June, a spokesperson for the ministry said on Monday.
Peijs introduced the 80km/h zones six months ago on highways around major cities in the Randstad to cut pollution levels and limit traffic jams. Both these problems have increased around The Hague.
The experience has been more positive in Amsterdam and Utrecht, and the reduced speed limit will remain in force in these locations.
The 80km/h limit will also remain in force on the A12 for motorists travelling towards The Hague because the lanes have been narrowed for road works.
