Wilders warns coalition partners

Freedom Party leader Geert Wilders has warned the cabinet that he would prefer early elections to a tightening of conditions for mortgage interest tax rebates and interest-only mortgages.

The ruling minority coalition of CDA Christian democrats and VVD conservatives relies on the Freedom Party for parliamentary support.

Mr Wilders made his objections to mortgage reform clear in a number of tweets he sent on Wednesday. The Freedom Party leader has repeatedly stated his strong objections to any form of mortgage reform, which is seen by many as essential to revitalising the housing market.

He reacted to an article in current affairs magazine Elsevier which said that the cabinet was considering tightening the rules regarding mortgage interest tax rebates.

Only last week, Prime Minister Mark Rutte emphasised that nobody was “drawing a bead” on mortgage interest tax rebates.
