THE NETHERLANDS - Dutch Interior Minister Guusje ter Horst wants to introduce new regulations for whistleblowers in the public sector and the police force.

The minister plans to establish an independent body - possibly within the Office of the Ombudsman - where evidence of public abuses can be reported while guaranteeing full anonymity to the whistleblower.

Addressing the Lower House of Parliament, Ter Horst expressed her concern about the present system which does not protect the whistleblowers adequately, leaving them exposed to possible reprisals.

She also plans to take up some cases of past whistleblowers which have had painful repercussions, like Ad Bos, who exposed large-scale fraud in the construction industry but ended up socially ostracised and bankrupt from ensuing court cases.
