Voice of Caucasus wins Dutch human rights medal

Gregory Shvedov will receive the Dutch medal today for promoting democracy and human rights.

Mr Shvedov is the man behind the online newspaper Caucasian Knot, which seeks to make independent news about the Caucasus region available to an international audience.

The journalists who provide the news for the paper often risk their lives in the process. On request, the paper therefore allows its staff to publish anonymously.

The Caucasus consists of independent and Russian republics, including Chechnya, Dagestan and Azerbaijan, where freedom of speech is under threat.
