Violence against soldiers in Curacao

The conservative VVD party and the Freedom Party have asked the government to clarify reports that criminals in Curacao are targeting Dutch military personnel stationed on the island.

According to Dutch newspaper de Telegraaf, the naval colony on the island lives in fear of the criminals who abuse Dutch students and regularly attack the homes of troops.

“Of course this is unacceptable. Our military families must be able to live there in safety,” said VVD MP André Bosman. He wanted to know why the Netherlands spends millions of euros a year on fighting crime in Curacao when the police are unable to provide security.

The Freedom Party directed similar questions to Defence Minister Hans Hillen and Minster of the Interior Piet Hein Donner. The party asked for an explanation about the possible link between an increase in robberies aimed at the Dutch and the alleged “increasing hate of the local people of Macambas, the white Dutch.”

The Freedom Party said the ministers must also address the situation in Aruba, where Dutch soldiers and their families are also facing rising crime levels.
