Van Persie sent off during Champions League match

FC Barcelona has reached the quarter finals of the Champions League knocking Arsenal out of the competition. The Spanish champions beat the English club 3-1 at home in its Camp Nou stadium, making good its 2-1 defeat against the Gunners. Dutchman Robin van Persie was sent off in the 56th minute following a second yellow card.

Lionel Messi put  Barça ahead during injury time in the first half. An own goal by Sergio Busquets brought Arsenal on level pegging at the beginning of the second half, but shortly afterwards Van Persie was sent off putting Arsenal at a disadvantage. Van Persie has only just recovered from a knee injury.

Goals by Xavi and Messi a penalty sealed victory for Barcelona. Last year, Barcelona knocked Arsenal out in the quarter final. In the final phase of the game, Barcalona put its new acquisition Dutch midfielder and former PSV player Ibrahim Afellay in the field.
