THE NETHERLANDS - Football player Robin van Persie will be fit to play in the first European Championship match against Italy on Monday. On Wednesday, the Arsenal player joined the Dutch squad in training for the first time since preparations for the competition began two weeks ago.

During training, he had no trouble from a thigh injury after an injury-plagued season. It is still not clear whether Van Persie will be fit to play a whole match.

Coach Marco van Basten has high hopes that he will, since he has not been out of action for very long.
