Children of asylum seekers may only be held in closed centres for 2 weeks maximum.

THE HAGUE – Underage children of refused asylum seekers who have exhausted their appeals may only be held in closed deportation centres for a maximum of 2 weeks from now on, and only if the family can be deported soon.

State secretary Nebahat Albayrak and Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin announced this in a letter to Parliament on Tuesday.

They would prefer not to hold children in closed centres at all. But sometimes that is unavoidable, especially if there is a great chance that the family may try to stay on in the country as illegal aliens rather than be deported.
