U2 band brings down Dutch telephone network

Fans of the Irish band trying to book tickets for a concert over the phone disrupted the national telephone network on Saturday.

NIJMEGEN – Telecom provider KPN is launching an investigation into why the national telephone network was partially down on Saturday afternoon in and around the eastern city of Nijmegen.

Many service numbers such as the General Practitioners' Call Centre were not reachable following a jump in national network traffic as callers tried to book tickets for a concert by Irish rock group U2.

Nijmegen's regional medical call centre said it is unacceptable that the health service is put at risk because concert tickets are being sold somewhere in the country.

KPN wants to find out why the network was unable to cope with the heavy traffic.
