TERSCHELLING - The 27th Oerol cultural festival on the island of Terschelling has attracted more than 55,000 visitors. Most of these were brought by ferry from the mainland.

The festival, which ran from 13-22 June, featured visual art, theatre and music. Fireworks on the final evening had to be cancelled due to strong winds. The main piece, featuring landscape theatre by US artist Robert Wilson, was sold out for every performance.

The organisers said the festival attracted more young people than in previous years; primarily because of the expanded music programme.
