BONAIRE - The mother of the main suspect in the abduction and murder of a young Dutch woman on Bonaire says her son has confessed to killing Marlies van der Kouwe.

She said Ryan Pieters wanted to steal Van der Kouwe's purse, and strangled her when she fought back.

The 24-year-old chemist's assistant was discovered last Friday near a landfill after torrential rains accompanying Hurricane Omar washed away the sand covering her shallow grave.

On 21 September, Van der Kouwe disappeared while she was on her way home after a beach party. She was seen dragged from her bicycle.

Meanwhile, a commemoration service is held for Van der Kouwe on Thursday on the Netherlands Antillean island of Bonaire. The service will be held in a youth centre, where a representative for the family will speak. It will be followed by a silent march to the spot where van der Kouwe was found.
