HILVERSUM – Despite the stepped up security at Schiphol, airport personnel are still able to take bags onto the premises without undergoing checks for their contents.

SBS6 journalist Alberto Stegeman made this claim during his television programme on Sunday evening on the basis of footage he made last Friday.

That was two days after Schiphol stepped up security measures in response to Stegeman's revelations. He says that the security at the airport has improved, but that baggage checks for personnel were still not being carried out properly.

An employee of SBS6 programme Undercover in Nederland was able to enter vulnerable points at Schiphol as a platform worker for three months without being stopped. As a result he was able to smuggle a fake bomb into the hold of a passenger aircraft.

Schiphol director Gerlach Cerfontaine said on Friday that nothing of this sort should have been allowed to happen. He said the incident was a downright shame. The Royal Marechaussee is currently investigating the case. Justice Minister Ernst Hirsch Ballin will inform Parliament of the initial findings on Monday.

The opposition in Parliament has been pushing for an emergency debate on the matter.
